Windows Update Service Missing service (along with Windows Defender and firewall had somehow been switched to "stopped" and had to be manually restarted from within this program. Restarting them did nothing, they restart with no error. EDIT 2: After the Windows Defender updates, normal Windows Updates are working again withoutthe "Service not running" message. What is the connection between Defender and running Windows Updates? Note: This laptop runs Windows 7 Home Premium. I checked the Windows Update Service dependencies and saw it was dependent on the "Remote Procedure Call" service. So odd the pc's are the same model just a few weeks newer.
All local group policy settings for Windows Update were set to Not configured, yet Registry settings existed in an AU folder within WindowsUpdate that would not update to match the group With 0% completion. Only think I had to add was I had to re-boot after (it did not work until I re-booted). the computer is working just fine and the system of my notebook wont install or download any update so far.
Please make sure "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" or BITS is running along with the Windows update service. Let it do it's Quick Scan and then download updates.
