DTS and DD are also used to send surround audio over optical or coaxial audio cables, as they only have enough bandwidth to carry 2 channels (stereo) in LPCM format. For example I could put out a Dolby surround signal through my receiver as a regular stereo sound - using only the two front speakers. When you're listening to a stereo source, instead of sending a stereo signal it still outputs 5.1 but only sends information to the front channels. and I gave you a Dolby speaker test link that will prove it to you incontrovertibly. but for the test I was thinking transformers or maybe robocop?
not everyone can afford whatever your standard of true 5.1 is but Dolby has always utilized matrixed surround channels very effectively. If your TV has this, you can send the audio through HDMI to the TV, and the TV can then output to the receiver. lcpm is superior to dd 5.1 dd 5.1 is compressed. dolby ex changes the 5.1 to 7.1 you need to learn how to set up your stereo receiver. Optical Out and Coaxial Out are Old digital outputs, the Wii U is nextbgen which is 1 digital output HDMI. i really can't tell the difference between Dolby digital 5.1 and Dolby pro logic ii 5.1.
