We tried 3 sets of new batteries and it does the same. Once synced (connected) when you press a button on the wii remote, one of the four lights should turn on and stay on. This indicates that there is a problem with the internal speakers of your Wii Remote. I tried this twice, and I highly doubt eight Wii Remotes all have dead batteries in them. Remove the batteries from your remote before cleaning your buttons. Can you help me?? IIRC correctly you have to press it on the Wii first and then the controller.Had to resynch both remotes earlier.
