I'm not the only one - I'm seeing posts from others with similar results. Twice I have lost my connection (remotely logging in and working on a workstation at work). They are saved to "My Documents" which, is in most cases, highly unlikely to be "..", and in many corporate cases likely to be on a shared network drive. Seems that bug is initiated at backup folder cleanup (last time = 7 days ago) when compiling a project.

These days, source control and saving regularly almost entirely eliminates the need for it. Hope that helps someone out. This is bad practice and does not follow the Windows guidelines.
