During this, the customer applied a guest customization specification to customize the guest OS (IP address, hostname etc). I converted the template to a VM, uninstalled the VMTools, rebooted, Reinstalled the VMTools and converted back to a template. This solved my problem!! 🙂 BL 28. I'm able to clone a running 2008 R2 VM that is a member of a domain and apply a customization specification. If I do a simple machine clone and set to customize it, it works great. But after the clone process, the guest customization started, but never finished. Then when I logged on I noticed that the customization does start but it's waiting for something and eventually times out.
